The Shop: Part II

These pictures and post are a long time coming. It seems I can't pull myself away from going through "stuff" and organizing every closet, drawer and space in general to sit down and blog. Thankfully, we finally have wireless internet which does make the task a little easier.

I guess it's been almost 2 weeks ago now that mom and dad came down to bring the cabinet doors for the hearth room built-ins and the door and drawers for the 'chaise cabinet'. These are both pieces that we worked on in the shop in addition to our closets.
Hearth Room

As you can see, the tile around the fireplace is finally done and we are starting to get photos up on the shelves. It is still a work in progress as we started to realize how dated some of our photos were and how many photos we had of just the two of us. It was starting to look a little bit like a Matt and Amy shrine, so we decided that now is as good time as any to update pictures. The yellow is starting to grow on us. We are still looking for the right thing to put above the fireplace - but for now, the watercolor of the Biltmore house is on display - as you can tell we need something much bigger to fill the space!

The 'chaise cabinet' as we started referring to it during construction was the result of a big screw up. where the cabinet sits was originally designed as an HVAC chaise for duct work to run though. When the trusses were set, one of the beams when right over the top of it preventing the duct work to fit. So now we had this space that was useless for its original intent. The drywall guy asked if we wanted him to just drywall over it so it was like it wasn't there but the wheels in my head were spinning thanks to a lot of pinterst and houzz ideas. So dad helped my vision come to life and we now have a drop zone for keys, mail, bills, pens, sticky notes, phone books, etc. Its turning out to be the best 'mistake' of the house! The photo is a little hard to see but the laundry room door is to the left and the hallway is to the right. Its absolutely perfect and dad was excited to make something out of 'real wood' and not paint it white!

The last big project from the shop was our closet systems. Mom snapped a few pictures of the installed systems before we had clothes in them. I must say, I LOVE MY CLOSET. It is by far, one of my favorite rooms in our house. I went out on a limb and painted the walls in there purple, which not many agreed with, but its beautiful and sets off the white shelving and my fabulous light! The best part is, I have empty shelves and a whole lower hanging section that is empty as well. And finally for the first time since moving out of my parents house when I went to college, all of my clothes are in one place. No more "out of season clothes" plastic totes!

Last night I got a full length mirror and Matt so graciously hung it for me in my closet. He also got my glass knobs up on the drawers in there. I have to say, its pretty much complete now and I LOVE it!

Matt is also completely thrilled with his closet. Although much smaller than mine, he now has all of his clothes in one location. Prior he had jackets and sweatshirts in the front closet, t-shirts and shorts folded in drawers in the built-in hall closet and then hanging clothes in the spare bedroom closet. He complained how he had to go to three different areas to get dressed in the morning, but hey, what's a girl to do, give up closet space!? :)  He does love his closet, but not as much as I do. Over all, we are absolutely thrilled with how everything turned out - thanks for all your help dad! Now, to see the insides filled up, you will have to make a trip and see it personally to get the full effect!
